about

Give it a name to make it exist. Play it while the recorder runs, do not delete, find label, release on tape (thank you Dead Vox).

Naam (“Name”) is an ode to the moment. I took my guitar and plugged it in my amp, played whatever fingers, feet, cables and pedals decided to confer and named it for people who had their birthday on the date of recording (thank you Facebook). Improvisation is a big part of how I write music, for short stretches of time even dominantly so. 5/6 of Naam was recorded in the same two weeks, in the midst of recording Pendel, as a companion and contrast to that album. “Panama” was culled from an earlier still-born improvisation ep to complete the tape.

All of the “songs” on Naam share ideas with composed material, the tunings, chords and scales of which I use to travel into half-known territory. The attentive listener will hear elements of “Veld” (from Pendel) reappearing in “Thommy”, or (s)he will perhaps recognise “Panama” as jumbled explorations of the scales used in “Vloed” and “Sluimer” (from Vloed). Or maybe (s)he will not, and simply enjoy these meditations for what they are: raw, unfinished but to my ears beautiful ideas that show a different side of yadayn.
